Nutrition for the Brain

Children's brain needs nutrients in order to function optimally. At early age, children's brain grow rapidly. As a result, at the age of five, their brain development has reached 90 percent and the rate is closely related to the diet.

For brain development, there are several important nutrients needed. Among them is DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), iron, zinc and folic acid.
gizi
DHA
DHA or docosahexaenoic acid is a type of omega-3 fatty acids which can be found in every cell in the body. DHA is important for brain, eyes and central nervous system. Studies conducted by the European Food Safety Corporation (EFSA) found that children aged six months to two years require about 100 milligrams of DHA for brain development.

DHA is a key element needed to form cell membranes of neurons that is the connecting link between the cell and affect the function of acetylcholine neurotransimitter and help brain cells communicate. Giving your child a daily diet rich in DHA will make it more focused and able to give full attention during play and learn. Among the foods that contain DHA are fish, eggs and chicken.

Iron
Iron is very important to facilitate the formation of hemoglobin in red blood cells and prevent anemia. Know that the child brain is sensitive to low iron levels. Iron deficiency that occurs in children may retard their learning ability. At the same time, the shortage has caused them to lose focus, there are symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), pale and haggard. Researchers found that iron helps increase the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain. Rich food sources of iron are red meat, liver, spleen, anchovies, tofu and tempeh.

Zinc
Zinc is important for proper brain function and iron deficiency is associated with cognitive weaknesses. Zinc deficiency can cause stunted growth in children, decreased immune function and poor appetite. Meat and seafood are the best sources of zinc. Beans, wheat germ, whole grains, seafood and meat has a high zinc content.

Folic Acid
Folic acid, also known as folate is a mineral needed for proper growth of a child. The acid is important for the construction of DNA in every cell. DNA serves as the custodian of the information from the cell. Children who are tired of folic acid deficiency, fatigue, poor concentration, irritability and forgetfulness. Green vegetables are good sources of folic acid.

Foods to be avoided:

Salty foods
Foods that contain too much salt is not only a catalyst for high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis, but also can damage arteries. This situation will continue to impact the blood supply to brain tissue that can cause brain cells suffer ischaemia and hypoxia that causes memory loss and brain retardation. Salt needs for the body is 7 grams for adults and less than 4 grams per day for children. Therefore, parents are advised to reduce feeding children more salt such as pickles and snacks.

Foods That Contain MSG
Medical studies show that pregnant women who regularly eat foods that contain MSG or monosodium glutamate in the final stages of pregnancy can cause zinc deficiency in infants it contains. Zinc deficiency can cause brain disorders, growth retardation, dyslexia and immune compromised. Signs of a child that zinc deficiency can be seen when they have no appetite, loss of sensation and difficult to heal. Therefore, the World Health Organization recommend that pregnant women and children were not given food containing MSG.

Lead
High lead content in the body very dangerous. Lead can interfere with brain function.Children affected by this problem can become hyperactive and have seizures.Generally, the lead in the environment can be acquired from contaminated soil, paint debris, dust that contains lead, water, cooked or stored in containers that contain lead, especially fruit acid that is placed in a container leaded and colored pencilsand water color (when inserted into the mouth).

Children are exposed to high lead content, especially for the likes to bring any items into their mouths. Children are also able to absorb 50 percent of lead higher than in adults. Absorption rate is increased if a child is suffering from malnutrition. Medical studies show that lead can kill brain cells and brain damage.
